BROOKHILL LEYS PRIMARY SCHOOL

EQUAL OPPORTUNITIES STATEMENT.

If we believe that all children are unique individuals, we must recognise that we are dealing with many different needs everyday. We feel that children are all on the same learning continuum but with some pupils needing different types of help and support at different times. Needs of individual learners are identified, assessed, catered for and kept under regular review. Children have a right to access learning opportunities regardless of race, class, gender, creed, language, stage of development or personal circumstances. We aim to take account of:

  • the needs of children of ethnic minority origin through a curriculum which reflects cultural diversity.

  • The view that sex stereotyping can inhibit individual abilities, preferences and ambitions.

  • Socio-economic factors which can inhibit children’s ability to recognise and take advantage of educational opportunity. Close contact with parents and understanding of particular personal problems faced by children is essential here.

We anticipate that the structure and content of the curriculum promotes genuine access for all children. Staff appreciate how such factors may affect learning and plan work and manage classes to take account of different needs whilst maintaining high expectations. All children have planned access to a broad and balanced curriculum so all may achieve good standards, develop their talent to the full and make the greatest possible progress. Pupils are given the same opportunities but not necessarily the same activities. Differentiated work is prepared to reflect individual needs in terms of materials, access, form of recording and level of support. Our aim is to increase independence and autonomy in every child. We feel the integration of all learners is necessary to enhance the quality of experience for every child.

We aim to provide resources which are free from stereotyping and that reflect equal opportunities and access in the widest sense. Most importantly we appreciate the right of all members of our community to be treated with respect.
